Coaching - Grade 2 Certificate Courses

At JKK Kayak Coaching our grade 2 courses are designed to build competence for the requirements of the Coast to Coast event. This includes the event organisers mandatory requirements published here. JKK Kayak Coaching is a training provider registered by the organisers of the Speight's Coast to Coast event.

We provide two grade 2 learning options:

• Facilitated grade 2 courses are run in classes of three or four by an accredited coach to our framework. Participants usually progress as a group with the same trainer. Facilitated Grade 2 Course Fee $850
• Self Directed Learning option grade 2 courses suit competitors who have developed kayaking skills in another discipline and are "crossing over" to multi-sport, those with competent friends who can provide coaching and support and people who want to engage their own coach. All we do is provide the framework and final assessment - just like getting a drivers license. Self Directed Grade 2 Course Fee $150

You choose which option suits your style of learning, we provide the learning modules,hire kayaks (facilitated courses only) and final assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions:

• Does it matter if I haven't purchased a kayak yet? Our coaching program is designed to teach in the style of kayak in which you will compete (long boats). If you are new to the sport we have a fleet of hire kayaks and paddles for use on facilitated courses, out-of-towner river trips and assessments. You need to provide your own clothing and compulsory equipment.
• Can I take my assessment in another kind of kayak? No, we only stand behind assessments completed in the same kayak you will be using at an event. However (subject to availability) you can hire any JKK kayak from our hire fleet for your assessment.
• Do you provide transport? All things are possible, but kayakers need to be self sufficient. Usually course participants coordinate transport and shuttles amongst themselves. Those without transport are expected to contribute to running expenses.
• How much time should I allocate in my training schedule to kayak skills? Our Grade 2 training course is usually divided into 4-5 learning sessions usually completed over successive weeks followed by an assessment. These sessions are not enough time for most people to develop competence and participants are expected to complete homework between lesson blocks. Time and practise in your kayak are essential.
• What if I need extra assistance? Some people appreciate a little more assistance and encouragement. Our accredited trainers receive most of your course fees directly. If you need assistance outside the course framework we encourage participants to make an arrangement with their trainer, just like engaging a personal trainer at the gym.
• Will I be ready in time for the Coast to Coast? While we make every effort to accommodate your training schedule, we can provide no guarantee of certification by a particular date. First it is important that you start training with enough time, then a variety of factors including injury, unfavourable river and weather conditions and unexpected slow progress can push out the date you reach sufficient competence to pass the assessment.
• What if I don't pass my assessment? First don't panic, its all about time in kayak and with further practice you will reach competence. If you have completed a facilitated course and you don't pass assessment, your re-sit is free. Self directed learners, re-assessment fee $75.
• Do you do package deals for customers who also purchase a kayak and gear? Yes, ask about our package deals.
• Do your courses run to schedule? Something we need to get clear up front. Kayak races are regularly run on alternate courses / cancelled and all responsible training providers find themselves postponing training trips. Factor into your schedule that we won't take you out in conditions beyond your ability - almost every course will have at least one postponement.
